It's Planting Time! |
Last week we had the pleasure of visiting with Don and Bo Sosebee at their farm on Mill Creek Mountain. Don was busy plowing rows for potatoes the old way with Sonny (the best way according to Don). |

Auto Advice from Charleston Auto Parts - Bumper to Bumper |
Hello again! It’s me, Scott Robins, coming to you from Charleston Auto Parts, ready to dive into a topic that’s crucial for your car's happiness (and yours): battery health!
In the automotive world, there are plenty of things that can throw a wrench in your day, but the first thing that greets you when you turn the key (or push the button, for the fancy folks) is the battery. Your battery should be charged up and raring to go first thing in the morning to kickstart your motor. The key factor to pay attention to is the battery's Cranking Amps, particularly the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA). Each battery has a specific amp rating to fit its intended use and price range.
So, what’s the big deal for you? Well, if your engine requires a minimum of 400 CCA and you’ve got a powerhouse 650 CCA battery, you’re in luck! UNTIL… the battery's power starts to dwindle over time. Suddenly, you’re down to 350 CCA, and your motor refuses to start just when you need it most—classic! We all know that things seem to go awry at the worst possible moments, right?
Now, you might be wondering, "How can I prevent this disaster?" The honest answer: the most reliable way to check a battery involves a process that takes a few hours and requires it to be out of the vehicle.
There are quicker methods, but they’re not always foolproof. We have a tester that checks the CCA and overall health of the battery. I like to tell my customers it’s about 90% accurate—it can definitely find a bad battery, but sometimes a battery tests good while still being on the verge of failure. Unfortunately, we don't have the special machine for the full evaluation here, but there’s one place in town that does: Hug GMC/Chevy. They have the mysterious machine that can charge, discharge, and test batteries to pinpoint any weak spots.
If you're short on time for the full battery evaluation, stop by any of these three local places with testers. You have Dale's Fina right across from the courthouse, Jones Automotive and Equipment on 217 South, and of course, Charleston Auto Parts.
So, what if your battery is bad? Time to start shopping for a new one! Different brands are available here in Charleston. Hug’s has AC Delco, Dale’s Fina offers Interstate batteries, and we proudly carry Continental batteries at Charleston Auto Parts. If you’re interested in a Motorcraft battery, we can order one by the next day!
Now, you might be wondering which battery is the best. Well, I’m here to boldly declare that mine is, of course! (wink) But seriously, many people have their preferred battery brand, and I always recommend sticking with what you’re comfortable with.
What should you do if your battery needs replacing? All the places listed can change the battery for you! We have some limitations at the parts store regarding time and where batteries can be located, but we’ll always point you in the right direction if we can’t accommodate you!
Well, I’ve rambled on long enough before I get sidetracked with other topics for another day! Thanks for reading, and don’t forget to check your oil!
